Body Piercings

Body Piercing refers to the practice of using a needle to pierce the body, generally for the purposes of wearing jewelry, and piercing refers as well to the pierced part of the body, and sometimes to the jewelry worn. Body piercing can also refer to the practice of play piercings, in which parts of the body are pierced for ritual or sexual purposes, or even bloodletting, which was practiced, for example, by the ancient Mayans as well as a number of American Northwest Indians. Body piercings include those done on the earlobe and ear cartilage, the nostril and septum, the lips and mouth, the face, the genitals, the nipples, and other areas of the body.

Piercing has been practiced for thousands of years by people all over the world. Ancient mummies have been found with pierced ears, jewelry dating back hundreds and thousands of years has been found in archaeological digs, and ancient paintings, sculptures, and other artifacts testify to the practice of piercing, most typically the ears, nose, and lips. The ancient Hebrews wore nose piercings and ear piercings, both for decorative purposes and also to mark slaves, the Centurions of ancient Rome are thought to have worn nipple piercings, Egyptians from the New Kingdom had pierced ears, nose piercing has been common in India since at least the sixteenth century, and ancient Meso-Americans wore jewelry in their ears, noses, and lower lips, and such decorations continue to be popular amongst indigenous peoples in these regions.

A number of African tribes, including the Berber and Beja, as well as the Bedouins of the Middle East and North Africa, have worn nose piercings. In Australia and Papua New Guinea, some tribesmen had their septums pierced, and wore tusks and other ornaments through their nose in order to make themselves appear more fierce when fighting. In Borneo, some men had their penises pierced for adornment, and lip plates and stretched ears have been worn in cultures ranging from Ethiopia to Brazil to Alaska to China.

Ritual piercing, in which the body is pierced and must endure being weighted with encumberments, has been practiced among a number of Native American societies including the Sioux, as well as by ascetics in India. In the West, pierced ears have been common for women for hundreds of years, and nipple piercing may have been practiced by some men in Europe as early as the nineteenth century.

Piercing is often a decorative act, as the jewelry worn in pierced ears, noses, and lips is often highly elaborate and decorative. On the other hand, piercing is often a part of initiation rituals and other rites of passage, and is used to mark an individual’s social position or their transition from one life stage to another. Piercing is also sometimes, especially in the modern West, used for sexual purposes, especially Genital Piercings, nipple piercings and tongue piercings, which are often worn by members of the BDSM community. Gay men have also historically worn piercings more than other Americans, both for sexual and decorative reasons. In the West, while ear piercing has been a normative decorative practice for centuries, other forms of piercing are less widely accepted. Nose piercings are perhaps the next most common piercing in the West, but most other piercings are seen by most mainstream Americans as unconventional at best, and deviant at worst. Body piercing in the West began to grow in the 1970s in California thanks to the work of piercer and Gauntlet founder Jim Ward, who, along with a handful of other piercing afficionados, began to develop and refine piercing technologies and jewelry, and offer them to the gay and leather community in West Hollywood that made up the initial community of piercing advocates. Later, piercing spread to punks, mainstream gay men and lesbians, and later youth in general.

Body piercing in the West today is typically practiced at body piercing studios, and sometimes Tattoo Studios, and in the United States, most piercings are done with a hollow medical needle. The needle is partially inserted into the part of the body being pierced, and, while still in the body, the jewelry, usually stainless steel or titanium, is pushed through the opening and the needle is removed. In some parts of the world, the piercer uses a cannula, which is a hollow plastic tube placed at the end of the needle, into which the jewelry is inserted. Piercing guns are only recommended to pierce ears, specifically the earlobe. Professionally created piercings can take anywhere from two weeks to eight months to heal, depending on the type of piercing and the placement on the body. Once the piercing has healed, jewelry other than the starter jewelry can be worn. Piercing studios, like tattoo studios, are generally regulated by the state health department, and practice the same types of sanitation and sterilization procedures taken by tattoo studios. Tools and jewelry are sterilised in autoclaves, piercers wear single-use gloves, and working areas are cleaned with antiseptic cleansers.
