Chemical Tattoo Peels – are they better than creams? by David Mitchell
More consumers wishing to get rid of unwanted tattoo ink are considering TCA peels, over traditional Tattoo Removal creams, why is this?
Many tattoo bleaching products include controversial additives. Some of these include preservatives, fragrances, abrasives and skin bleaching agents.
Some of these skin fading additives and their concerning side effects are:
Kojic Acid – Is a byproduct of fermentation that occurs during the process of making sake – a popular wine in Japan. This acid is used in tattoo removal products and many cosmetics as a skin lightener. It is often used as a substitute for hydroquinone. There is growing evidence that it may be a cancer causing agent and it has been known to irritate skin.
Hydroquinone – Has been used frequently as a lightener for many years now. Testing has indicated that it has the potential to cause cancer. It was banned in cosmetic in the EU states, as well as in Australia and some other Asian countries. It is still available in the US and Canada over the counter in low concentrations.
Alpha-Arbutin – It is a cheap alternative to hydroquinone and kojic acid and is proven to act quickly in lightening pigmented skin. It interferes with the production of an enzyme in the top skin layers where melanin is produced (melanin is the natural chemical that darkens skin).
Arbutin – Occurs as a natural derivative of hydroquinone and can be found in the leaves of many types of shrubs including cranberry, bearberry, and blueberry. It is considered less effective than Alpha and Beta Arbutin but can inhibit tyrosinase production which interferes with the production of melanin. Higher concentrations of 5% or more are known to be as irritating as hydroquinone and can result in unwanted hyper-pigmentation, or darkening of the skin. Manufacturers that include this ingredient in their products will sometimes refer to it as ‘non-toxic’ causing minimal irritation, but there are many others with differing opinions.
Parabens – These are preservatives widely used in cosmetics and some tattoo fade creams. They are considered to be effective and are contained in many consumer products like shampoos and even toothpaste. They have also been used extensively in foods but are becoming more controversial and some in the health community object to their use.
Mercury – Is often found in cosmetics and can be found in some tattoo bleaching products but not in TCA tattoo peel products. It is highly toxic if ingested or inhaled. Since the FDA does not certify cosmetics (including tattoo removal creams and their ingredients) this element is still widely used.
Not all tattoo bleaching products have their ingredients listed on their websites. It is up to the consumer to find out what kinds of harmful ingredients may be contained in them. Consumers should try to gather as much information as they can before making a decision to purchase.
